Arrival information

Pronunciation

Boğaziçi is pronounced BOAZITCHY.Please use this pronunciation if you need to ask people for the way, otherwise they might not understand what you mean. The area where the university main entrance gate is located is called Rumeli Hisarüstü, and it is pronounced ROOMELY HEESAREWSTEW.

Venue

All lectures, coffee breaks, and lunches will take place on the top floor (Room VYKM 1) of the Perkins Hall (The Faculty of Engineering) on the South Campus of Boğaziçi University. When you leave the metro station Boğaziçi University, go right on the main road for about 100 m and you will see the main entrance gate of the university. To enter the university, please explain that you will attend WG 2016 at the Deparment of industrial engineering, and show your ID. From the main campus entrance, just follow the main road downhill, and then after a couple of hundred meters take the first road to the left which leads you directly to the Engineering Building.

Transportation

From Airport to Taksim: The most convenient airport to arrive in Istanbul is Atatürk Airport. The most convenient way to travel between this airport and Taksim (where the conference welcome reception and two of the suggested hotels are) is by Havataş airport bus.

Istanbulkart: During your stay in Istanbul, you will need a transportation card called Istanbulkart, which allows you to travel on buses, metros, trams, boats, etc. These cards are sold at selected vending machines at selected metro stations, and they can be topped up very easily (using cash only!) at all machines of all metro, tram and boat stations. Taxis are cheap and easily available in Istanbul, however the traffic is very unpredictable and often blocked, except late at night or very early in the morning.

We have a limited number of Istanbulkarts, which we will hand out at the welcome reception to those who need it.

From Taksim to Boğaziçi University: Leave your hotel an hour before the start of the conference, at least the first morning. (It might take you a while to figure out the metro, and the last metro leg goes only every 10 minutes.) Take Metro line M2 from Taksim in the direction Haciosman. Get off at Levent. From the platfrom in Levent, be sure to follow the signs to metro line M6. You will exit one platform and enter another one (paying once more, tranfer price). Metro line M6 operates only between Levent and Boğaziçi University. Take it to the final station Boğaziçi University. On the way back to Taksim, take M6 from Boğaziçi University to Levent, and then take M2 in the direction Yenikapi, and get off at Taksim.

There is also a direct bus line from Taksim to Rumeli Hisarüstü: 559C. The university is one stop before the last. This line takes around 50 minutes to reach the university. In Taksim it departs from the bus stop called Park Otel (in front of Park Hotel Bosphorus). It does not have extact departure times from Taksim, as it is a ring line, but a bus is scheduled to leave Taksim about every 8 minutes. Note that traffic is highly unpredictable.

From Nispetiye to Boğaziçi University: Exit Uygulama Hotel and go left. Just walk straight, staying on Nispetiye road until you reach the university entrance gate. Walking takes about 30 min at easy pace. If you want to take the metro, M6 is the only line that operates there. Make sure to take it in the direction Boğaziçi University. There are also several buses passing by. You can take any bus with destination Rumeli Hisarüstü (written on the bus) and get off at the stop Boğaziçi Üniversitesi (second to last stop). This bus stop is right after the main entrance, so you walk back 30 meters.

From Taksim to Nispetiye: From Taksim, take M2 in the direction Haciosman, get off at Levent, change to M6, and get off at Nispetiye. You can also simply leave the metro at Levent, and walk from Levent to Nispetiye. It does not involve much more walking than what you have to do inside the station to change platforms, and you will save the fare of the last bit. Going back to Taksim, from Levent take M2 in the direction Yenikapi, and get off at Taksim.

Eating out

Muslims all around the world are observing the holy month of Ramadan during our conference, and many people are fasting (no eating or drinking from dawn to sunset). This normally does not affect the services at restaurants and cafés, except perhaps at the time of breaking the fast, which is around 8:50 pm (20:50). (Many locals join the feast and take their dinner at this time even if they are not fasting.) Some restaurants will serve a fixed menu to be able to serve everybody at once. You can ask the restaurant before entering. If you take your dinner at around 7 pm, there should be no problems.
