Venue and practical information

The conference will take place at Perkins Hall (The Faculty of Engineering) on the South Campus of Istanbul Boğaziçi University. All entrances of the campus are security guarded, and participants will have to show an official ID to enter the campus.

Please click to see a map where the locations of the conference and the conference hotels are marked.

Pictures of Istanbul taken by Instagram users

The conference will be from Wednesday June 22 to Friday June 24, 2016. Participants are expected to arrive in Istanbul on Tuesday June 21.

There will be a welcome reception with food and drinks in the evening of June 21 at Taksim Point Hotel. There will be a boat excursion along the Bosphorus in the afternoon of June 23, with a following banquet dinner the same evening at the Kennedy Lodge of the university. The business meeting (for the committees and the invited speakers) will be in the evening of June 22 with food and drinks.

We will add detailed arrival and transportation information as the conference dates approach. In the meanwhile, the most convenient airport to arrive in Istanbul is Atatürk Airport. The most convenient way to travel between this airport and Taksim (where the conference welcome reception and two of the suggested hotels are) is by Havataş airport bus. During your stay in Istanbul, you will need a transportation card called Istanbulkart, which allows you to travel on buses, metros, trams, boats, etc. These cards are sold at selected vending machines at selected metro stations, and they can be topped up very easily (using cash only!) at all machines of all metro, tram and boat stations. Taxis are cheap and easily available in Istanbul, however the traffic is very unpredictable and often blocked, except late at night or very early in the morning.

However, note that in most cases your passport has to be valid until at least 6 months after the end of your visit to Turkey.

We have agreements with the three hotels listed below. Please see the map for the location of the hotels. The Taksim area, where two of the hotels are located, is a very central and popular location for tourism purposes. It offers a large variety of prices and categories of accommodation. We have personally visited the hotels below, but you might also consider checking other alternatives via hotels.com or booking.com.

Taksim Point Hotel (5-star)
Single room: 85 EUR
Double room: 95 EUR
The prices are guaranteed until June 15. An excellent breakfast buffet is included.

Taksim Point Hotel is our luxury option, however they have made an exceptionally tempting offer for our participants, with an outstanding discount from their normal prices. This hotel is located in Taksim, and the Havataş airport bus stops right in front of it. The hotel is close to the Taksim station of metro line M2. If you stay in Taksim, you will take the metro to the university. (Take line M2 in the direction of Hacıosman, change to line M6 at Levent, and get off at the last stop of line M6.) The Taksim area is vibrant with an excellent variety of restaurants, bars, and shopping possibilities. It also offers easy connection to all major tourist attractions.

The welcome reception of WG 2016 will take place at Taksim Point Hotel in the evening of June 21 between 18:00 and 22:00.

The web page of Taksim Point Hotel provides all relevant information in English. Among other things, the hotel has a fitness center for free use of their cusotmers, and usage of wi-fi is free for all customers. Our contact person at this hotel is Ms Elif Taner. To book a room at Point Hotel at the presented price, please fill out this form, and email it to etaner@pointhotel.com.

Taksim Midtown Hotel (4-star)
The web page of Midtown Hotel provides all relevant information in English. This hotel is also located in Taksim, just a few meters from Point Hotel.

Etiler Uygulama Hotel
Single room: 120 TRY (approximately 35 EUR)
Double room: 160 TRY (approximately 50 EUR)
Prices are guaranteed until May 20. Breakfast is included. We have only 30 rooms reserved at this hotel; they will be reserved first come first served.

The Etiler Uygulama Hotel in Nispetiye is the cheapest of the three hotels and the closest one to campus. It is the practice hotel of a vocational public high school of tourism. It offers the facilities of a 3-star hotel, with air conditioned rooms, free breakfast buffet and wi-fi, private bathroom, TV, hair dryer, refrigerator and balcony in every room. However the staff consists of the pupils of the school, and the quality of service cannot be guaranteed. The web page of the vocational school is only in Turkish, but here is a presentation of the hotel with many pictures, and here are the address and contact information.

The hotel is at 30 minutes' walking distance, or two metro stations (or bus stops), from the the location of WG 2016. The hotel is next to the Nispetiye station of metro line M6, and very close to a fancy shopping mall (with cafes, cinemas, etc inside) just accross the street. There is also a bus stop close by. The Nispetiye area offers a lot of restaurants and bars.

Our contact person at this hotel is the vice headmaster Mr Kazım Şener. To book a room at the Uygulama Hotel, please send an email to etileruygulamaoteli@hotmail.com with Cc to kazimsener45@hotmail.com, using subject line "Reservation for Conference WG 2016 at Bogazici University", specifying your arrival and departure dates and asking for a confirmation.
