Doctoral Program

Admission Requirements

Students with an M.S. degree in Engineering or an M.A. degree in Sciences can apply to the Ph.D. program. Applicants are required to have a minimum of 3.00/4.00 grade point average, and to be in the top 10% or higher percentile in the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Test (ALES), or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The requirements related to the English proficiency for the M.S. program also apply for the Ph.D. program applications. M.S. students in the Industrial Engineering Department at Boğaziçi University who complete their coursework with an average of at least 3.75/4.00 can apply to the Ph.D. program before completing their M.S. theses.

Degree Requirements

The Ph.D. program in Industrial Engineering comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work and a thesis is carried out according to the regulations of the Institute of Graduate Studies. Ph.D. programs for students with an M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University will be determined according to the needs of the student by his/her advisor. Other students must first satisfy the course requirements of MS program of the Department of Industrial Engineering. Some or all of these requirements can be met through equivalent courses taken in other graduate programs. Their regular Ph.D. program will be determined according to the needs of the student by his/her advisor.


The Ph.D. program requires at least 24 credit-hours of coursework that should be completed in 4 semesters for students with an M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Bogaziçi University. Students with non-IE backgrounds first have to take preliminary courses to fill in the gap in their program, and two courses from each of the three areas mentioned in the M.S. program in addition to their regular Ph.D. program. The specific courses selected by a given student will be chosen jointly by the student and a faculty advisor. The student is encouraged to tailor his/her program to his/her own interests. Students in the Ph.D. program are required to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00/4.00 throughout their coursework.

Qualifying Exam and Thesis Proposal

Each Ph.D. student must pass a qualifying exam and prepare a thesis proposal. The examination is in three parts: in-class, take-home and oral. In addition, the students are required to submit a written thesis proposal and present it to a jury. The students are expected to show their breadth of knowledge as well as the depth of their understanding and to demonstrate their research capabilities. A student who passes the qualifying examination must prepare a thesis proposal in 6 months.


When a student has passed the qualifying exam, the thesis advisor will help the student determine a plan for completing a Ph.D. dissertation which is the remaining major segment of the program. The student has a maximum of 4 semesters to complete the coursework and a maximum of 8 semesters to complete the Ph.D. program.
