Distributed Leader Election

by

Mordechai Shalom,

(Tel Hai College & Boğaziçi University

Abstract:

In a distributed network, many global decisions can be taken easily in the presence of a leader. In many networks such a leader cannot be designated in advance and has to be elected by the processors comprising the network.

We consider the asynchronous message passing model in which processors can communicate only by sending and receiving messages, and there is no upper bound on the reception time of a message. However, we assume that the network is reliable, i.e. every message sent will actually be received. We also assume that the messages sent on the same link arrive in FIFO order, and that the processors have distinct identifiers.

We present various algorithms from the literature solving this problem with efficient message complexity in ring networks.

The talk is self-contained and does not assume a priori knowledge of Distributed Systems.
